Vaccine against Streptococcus Pneumoniae to Protect Children under 5 Years of Age

  • Date: 2018-12-13
  • Issued by: Health Bureau

If your children were born after 2010, please take note whether they have received vaccination against Streptococcus pneumoniae or not. Starting from January 1, 2015 onwards, the Health Bureau of Taichung City Government provides the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) to children aged 0 to 5 in a range of 1 to 3 vaccinations. As of July 31, 2015, the vaccination rate has reached 70% in Taichung City. The Health Bureau reminds parents to have their children vaccinated before December 31, 2015 at the latest, so as to improve their immunity to pathogens.

Children under 5 years of age are at a higher risk of being infected by the "invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae", leading to pneumonia, sepsis, meningitis and other serious complications. Thus, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), Ministry of Health and Welfare suggested that every child less than 5 years old receive Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine whose protection rate is as high as 90%, said the Health Bureau.

As the vaccination of Streptococcus pneumoniae takes 2 to 3 weeks to become protective and it can be inoculated with conventional vaccines or influenza vaccine at the same time, the Health Bureau calls on parents to take their babies who are qualified for vaccination but have not yet been injected with Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine to get shot at the district health centers and contracted medical institutions as soon as possible. When you go, please remember to bring along your health insurance IC card and the child health handbook. It is also advisable that you call up the medical institute to confirm the vaccination service time before you go.

Yuan-nian Hsu (徐永年), Director-general of Health Bureau, said, “The inoculation of Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae infections. Moreover, a balanced diet, moderate exercise, adequate sleep and a good personal hygiene (like washing hands, wearing masks, and observing the etiquette in coughing) are all the basic principles to prevent infectious diseases. If you can strengthen your immune system, you will make disease prevention and control even easier.”
