  • Issued by: Health Bureau

Xu Yong-nian (徐永年), Director-general of Health Bureau, provides four strategies to prevent heat stroke. "Hide from strong sunlight; drinke extra fluids; protect from sunlight exposure; and keep indoor adequate ventilation."

Method 1: Hide yourself from strong sunlight
Schedule your outdoor activity to either early morning or after sunset and take a timely rest under a cool and shady place.
Avoid sports or work under the intensive sunlight, especially during the period between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.

Methods 2: Drink extra fluids
Drink water at any time. It is best to drink 2 to 4 cups (240cc per cup) of water per hour.
To prevent loss of body fluids, avoid drinking beverages that contain alcohol or sugar and don’t drink cold drinks or ice water too much, either.

Methods 3: Protect from sunlight exposure
Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting and breathable clothing. When outdoors, hold up parasols and wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
Put up sunscreen 30 minutes before going out

Methods 4: Keep indoor adequate ventilation
Go to places with fans or air-conditioning such as public libraries or shopping malls.
Do not leave an infant, a child, and/or a pet alone in the car.

Five treatments steps for people with heat stroke
(1) Move the patient to an air-conditioned environment or at least a cool, shady area as soon as possible.
(2) Remove any unnecessary clothing.
(3) Wet the patient's skin with water and fan air over him or her.
(4) Feed the patient with cool water with a little bit of salt or diluted electrolyte drinks.
(5) Send the patient to hospitals as soon as possible (call 119).
